Chapter 137

6 min read

When I left the workshop, the sun was slowly setting.

How did this much time pass? I didn’t even know that this much time had passed because I was busy being dragged around by an overly excited Asilla.

“My Lady, shall we go back to the mansion? Or would you like to stop by the jewelry store?”

I kind of wanted to go home. I was exhausted as Asilla had sucked all my energy. However, since the schedule was already planned, I decided to go ahead with it.

Also, I was curious. How many people had visited our jewelry store?

“Let’s go to the jewelry store.”

I wanted to take care of everything  at once and then relax. I swallowed back a yawn and stared blankly out the window.

Squeak, suddenly the well-running carriage stopped. I muttered as I looked at the empty road.

“What is going on?”

“Miss, I will find out and come back.”

When I opened the window and poked my head out, I saw the coachman and the escort knight talking about something. Their faces were quite serious as if something had gone wrong.

‘What was in the way?’

I tried stretching out my neck, but I couldn’t see the situation in front of the carriage.

The Baron, who returned just in time, explained the situation.

“My Lady, the road has been closed because there’s some problem ahead.”

“Then what should we do? This is the only way.”

“It will take a while, but we have to go back using the way along the mountain.”

I saw the mountain the Baron pointed with his hand and clicked my tongue.

‘If we go that way, it’d take too much time to reach the capital.’

By the time we’d get to the city, the sun would completely set. Wouldn’t the staff keep waiting for us without being able to get off work? I felt very sorry for them. So, I changed my mind, not wanting to annoy the poor employees.

“Baron, let’s go back to the mansion today.”

“Okay, My Lady.”

“Then wake me up when we arrive.”

I need to take a nap. I leaned back in a comfortable position and closed my eyes.

    *

“… My Lady!”

My eyes widened at the strong force shaking my shoulders. The baron, looking urgent, kept looking outside the carriage. The anxiety on his face sent a chill down my back.

“What’s the matter?”

As soon as I hurriedly got up, the knight outside shouted in an urgent voice.

“We’re being attacked.”

Why do my ominous premonitions never go wrong? The only people outside were the coachman and the knights given by Lanoa. I could feel the presence of eight people outside.

Except for the coachman and the two knights, the other five must be the attackers.

‘The coachman has no power. He’d probably be the first to die.’

The two knights had to fight. The odds against them were big, but they were knights chosen by the Katzel family and my father. They wouldn’t get beaten easily.

However, the problem was that the number of assailants was five or more. No matter how brilliant a knight was, he was bound to be pushed back if he had to fight so many enemies.

In addition, if the opponent’s skills were excellent, we were at a great disadvantage.

I have to help-

“My Lady, please don’t come out!”

I came to my senses at the knight’s cry.

They were after me. I didn’t know what their purpose was, but I was sure they were not aiming for the Baron. Like the knight said, I had to quietly hide myself.

I had the power to help the knights. I could protect myself, and I could protect them too.

But what was I doing, hiding inside?

‘Coward.’

My conscience screamed at me to run at once. I reached for the doorknob without hesitation, but was stopped by the Baron.

“You can’t.”

“We are at a disadvantage. At least one more person has to join them and fight.”

“Absolutely not. Master Lanoa ordered us to protect the lady first. Even if My Ldy’s skills are better than the knights, I wouldn’t let you go out.”

I chewed on my already chapped lips.

Why couldn’t the baron understand the situation? If all the knights die and only the two of them remain, that would be the worst.

“I have to help them!”

“You don’t even have a weapon! You can’t!”

While arguing with the Baron, the carriage shook with a thump.

“Ouch!”

As I turned my head toward the place where I heard the screams of death, the bloodstained window came into my view.

Beyond that, the knight who shouted to me not to come out fell down like a doll whose strings had been cut off.

“Now only one…”

No, is there a knight alive anymore? Maybe that knight was the last survivor. As if to support the assumption, the sharp sound that had been ringing outside stopped.

It was total annihilation.

In the end, the worst situation, that I was worried about, had happened.

‘If I had also joined them, we wouldn’t have ended up this miserable.’

I should have shoved the baron away when he tried to stop me. While I was blaming myself for my misjudgment, Baron’s trembling hand brought me back to reality.

“Lady Rosetta, have you packed any magic stones or scrolls?”

As I contemplated, I opened my mouth when I remembered it belatedly.

“Yes, I have.”

Yeah, I had scrolls. I opened a duffel bag lying in the corner of the carriage.

Out of the scrolls in my bag, there were only three scrolls with teleportation magic. I handed one of them to the baron.

“Rip it at the same time.”

We tore the scroll at the same time, silently wording one, two, and three together. I closed my eyes tightly in preparation for the sensation of my body rising, but I felt nothing.

‘Huh, what happened?’

What I saw as I opened my eyes was, the cold carriage and a bewildered baron. Swallowing back expletives, I tore the remaining scrolls and activated all the mana stones I had. But no magic could be used. All those weapons were useless.

“Heuk.”

We’re doomed. For some reason, I knew things couldn’t go this smoothly. Then this happened. Fate really was not on my side. It is said that sometimes the scrolls could be defective, but even after tearing all the scrolls, if there’s still no response, then an offsetting/canceling magic was probably being used outside.

‘They are very determined.’

It was different from the other times. Their purpose was clear and earnest.

“My Lady.”

“They’re of no use.”

I threw the bag on the floor. Seeing the torn and broken magic tools, the Baron’s eyes became empty.
