Just then, an old woman dragged her back.
“Don’t go, Miss!” The granny was a shoe insole seller, and her hands were covered with rough calluses.
Lou Wanjun glanced back, and heard the granny hurriedly advising her, “That Mister Du is a young master of a high-ranking official family. He has made trouble here several times, but no one dares to control him.”
Lou Wanjun frowned: “So why is he making trouble?”
The granny lowered her voice and said, “The family of the gentleman who wrote the letter is poor, but he came out on top in the triennial provincial imperial exam. That Mister Du is in the same year as him, so he is jealous.”
Lou Wanjun sneered: “What high-ranking official? I would like to meet him.”
He was the son of some high-ranking official, right? Even if he was Huo Wujiu’s son, she would still beat him up.
The granny anxiously pulled her: “Miss! You’ll only get yourself beheaded!”
Lou Wanjun patted her hand and said genially: “Granny, don’t be afraid. I’m more powerful than him.”
After saying that, she turned around, and with a flick of her sleeve, she pushed her way through the crowd.
That Mister Du along with several of his lackeys were currently scattering and splashing things. In a blink, the letter writing stall was smashed in a disarray. What was more, a young man, who was holding the letter in his hand kept moving towards the gentleman who wrote it.
The gentleman stood in place like a pine with his hands tightly clenched on his sides, making the veins on the back of his white hands bulge a bit.
“Do it! Come on! Just punch this young master here!” Mister Du provoked him loudly.
Lou Wanjun strode forward and lifted him up by the back of his collar.
“All right, as you wish.” She gritted her teeth in anger, single-handedly hoisted Mister Du, and greeted the face she moved closer with a heavy fist.
In an instant, the crowd was thrown off their feet. A series of alarmed cries also erupted around in the wake of it.
Lou Wanjun couldn’t care less about it. This young master was just a weak chicken who could only chant poetry and paint pictures. In front of her, he wasn’t as good as the sandbag in the military camp. She carried him in one hand and just punched him in the face, easily beating the young man to a pulp.
Afterwhich, she raised her hand and tossed the boy into the corner.
There was even an inaudible applause from the spectators.
“Who dares to be presumptuous here?!” A nameless lackey nearby shouted.
The next moment, Lou Wanjun lifted him by the collar too.
“I was just about to ask you guys.” She hooked one corner of her mouth, revealing a clenched jaw. “Let me hear it. How great of an official is your father that you dare to make trouble downtown?”
The bruised and swollen Mister Du finally opened his eyes and shouted, “Where did that bitch come from?! You’re really courting death!”
Hearing the word ‘bitch’, Lou Wanjun hissed, rolled up her sleeves and went to beat him up again.
But at that moment, a person raised his hand to stop her.
The robe made from coarse cloth and rough patches were indescribably clean and upright when worn on the man. The hand that stopped in front of Lou Wanjun was quite white, so she raised her head and looked at the owner of the hand.
… What a handsome young man!
Lou Wanjun’s gaze paused on him, and she couldn’t help but stare at him some more.
Honest and neat, tall, with sparse eyebrows and eyes that were a bit cold; his body has a faint smell of books and ink.
The gentleman seemed to be named Nie Cong as mentioned earlier.
“Miss, this isn’t necessary,” Nie Cong said. As expected, his voice was distinctly clear. It was him. “This person is not easy to mess with. I’ll deal with him myself. You’d better leave first, Miss.”
Lou Wanjun looked at him and then at herself.
Sure enough, her clothes were clean and neat, and totally simple. She didn’t look like a powerful person at all. She has never made it a habit to show off. In addition, she always practiced martial arts and rode horses, so such clothes were more comfortable to wear.
However, at this moment, Lou Wanjun was struck with a strong desire to show off.
Who would not want to protect such a gentleman who was neither subservient nor overbearing despite being bullied on the street? On the contrary, he was worried about dragging her down at such a critical moment.
Lou Wanjun raised her hand and pressed it on the gentleman’s arm. She smiled at him and said, “Relax.”
After saying that, she took a huge step forward, walked up to Mister Du and kicked him a few times in full view of everyone.
Then, she squatted down and lifted him up. With one hand, she searched for the money on him and threw it to Nie Cong right after finding it.
“Payment for your letter stand.” Lou Wanjun turned around and said to Nie Cong, “Take it.”
Afterward, she turned around and said loudly to Mister Du.
“Now, tell me who your father is, so that I broaden my mind,” she said.
Mister Du’s mouth was swollen from the beating, and his speech was a bit slurred now. Nevertheless, he still said loudly, “My father is Du Ren, the Minister of Works. Why? Do you think a thug like you who wanders from place to place can afford to provoke him?!”
Lou Wanjun laughed.
“It shames me to say, but I indeed can afford to mess with him.” She said, “Shall we make a bet? Do you believe it or not? Today, your father and you will have no good ending.”
After saying that, she shoved Mister Du away and stood up.
“What arrogant claptrap!” Mister Du was still talking tough.
“I still have wilder ones left.” Lou Wanjun looked down at him, turned around, and glanced at his lackeys.
“You guys, remember it well. If anyone dares to make trouble here again, then the one who will come to beat you up next time will be Lou Yue. If there is another time, then Huo Wujiu will take his turn.”
The spectators didn’t know who the girl in front of them was, but everybody knew who Lou Yue, General Lou, and Huo Wujiu were.
A burst of exclamations erupted around, and even the few lackeys were so frightened that their legs almost gave out.
Just then, a carriage drove by and hurriedly stopped beside her.
“Little Sister Wanjun?” The man in the carriaged raised the curtain, showing just the right amount of surprise on his face.
Lou Wanjun turned her head and blinked in confusion.
Huo Yuyan? How could he appear here?
For a moment, Lou Wanjun didn’t know whether to call him Brother Huo or Your Highness, and stood awkwardly in place.
Meanwhile, Huo Yuyan, who was in the carriage, swept his eyes across the people present without a trace.
There was nothing to see as there were only a bunch of young masters beaten up along with the commoners around them.
What was noteworthy was Lou Wanjun’s spirited and defiant appearance, as well as the shabbily dressed young man standing next to a smashed stall.
The young man was tall, his body was upright, and his looks… were extremely distinguished.
Huo Yuyan’s expression dimmed.
