Chapter 196

8 min read

Uncle (2)

The bodyguard walked behind them and said aloud, “Mr. and Mrs. are waiting inside…”

As soon as his words fell, the door in front of them opened.

A foreign maid greeted them as they entered.

When they finally entered the main living room, the person inside slowly stood up and only said two words nonchalantly, “Already here.”

Xi Chengyun also only indifferently responded, “Yes, uncle.”

Bai Qi raised his eyes and greeted him.

He saw a man who looked to be in his early fifties, well-maintained and still young, with only a few fine lines at the corners of his eyes and between his eyebrows.

He wore a dark gray polo shirt, black pants, and a pair of gray shoes with a shape similar to Zulijian’s*.

*Zulijian: Zulijian (足力健) is a brand of elderly shoes.

The man’s face was expressionless, as if his fashion sense, which was stuck in the last century, had completely wasted this handsome face.

If it wasn’t for the Patek Philippe’s watch on his wrist, barely revealing good taste, he probably looked like a salesman who relied on his face to trick people into buying insurance.

Bai Qi blinked, ‘almost rivaling my dad’s dressing style.’

Bai Qi called out, “Uncle.”

The man then answered back, “Mm.” Then there were no more words.

For a while, the atmosphere in the living room was stagnant, as if they were the only ones left staring at each other.

At this moment, the program crew on the other side all landed at the airport.

Countless media surrounded them, striving to pick up a piece of hot news.

“Xi-laoshi didn’t come back?”

“Did he and Bai Qi go on a honeymoon alone?”

Netizens were also asking questions.

[Hasn’t Director Zheng’s movie already been sent for review and is ready to be released? Xi-laoshi didn’t come back to participate in the roadshow?]

[Xi Chengyun: Don’t want to bring my wife back to meet the grass on top of the wall*.]

*The grass on top of the wall (墙头草) refers to people who don’t have a mind of their own, are easily swayed, and always choose to support the more powerful or winning side of an argument or controversy, like the grass on top of the wall swaying to wherever the winds blow.

[LOL]

[Fans haven’t even finished apologizing yet, have they?]

[Isn’t that true? Many celebrities jumped into the water and declared they wanted Bai Qi to like themselves. Fans’ hearts are broken.]

The internet was still lively with discussion.

On the other side, Father Jiang also saw the news.

Father Jiang sneered, “What a troublemaker.” Then he got up and walked to the first floor.

Jiang Fangcheng was sitting on the first floor at the moment, staring straight at the projection screen, appearing a bit absent-minded.

A wave of the anger of hating iron for not becoming steel* arose in Father Jiang’s heart, and he coldly said, “Your older brother got the inheritance.”

*Hating iron for not becoming steel (恨铁不成针) describes the resentment towards somebody for failing to meet expectations.

Jiang Fangcheng: “Oh.”

Father Jiang: “Aren’t you anxious?”

Jiang Fangcheng then rolled his eyes. “Mm. Didn’t you say so? What are you afraid of? He still has to rely on us for the whereabouts of his younger brother.”

Father Jiang sprinted forward and raised his hand to slap him. “Then you can’t just sit there like this! Why don’t you know how to utilize the Han family’s relationship to get your new contract? Fight for it! Don’t let your older brother see you make a fool of yourself!”

Jiang Fangcheng’s face twisted as he suddenly got up and pushed Father Jiang back. “Who do I blame for being like this now? I’ve already made a fool of myself enough. My boyfriend is now standing by his side! They are even on their honeymoon abroad! How will my older brother mock me in his heart right now? What do you think?”

Father Jiang’s face turned green. “I know you can’t get over this in your heart, but your older brother may not have an easy and happy life either. He hasn’t returned home until today, so he should have gone to see his uncle. His uncle himself has chosen a business marriage. Can he think highly of him for bringing back a man? There’s still much trouble to be made. If he wants to snatch something from you, he might be unable to keep it in his hands either.”

Jiang Fangcheng’s face changed slightly. “What will Uncle do? Will he make a move against Bai Qi?”

Father Jiang couldn’t help but scold him, “Are you crazy? What’s it to you if he makes a move against him or not?” He sneered, “Xi Feng’s wife is a standard big lady from a wealthy family and an iron lady with eyes on top of her head*. She won’t treat anyone nicely either.”

*Eyes on top of the head (眼睛长在头顶上) means to regard everyone as unimportant or not worthy of attention.

Jiang Fangcheng couldn’t sit still any longer and immediately headed out.

Seeing this, Father Jiang became even more angry and immediately went to stop him.

When the servants arrived upon hearing the sound, both father and son had fought, smashing pieces of debris all over the floor.

Jiang Fangcheng’s mother received a phone call and hurried back home.

Her curly hair was only half permed, and she looked hilarious now. She rushed to stop Father Jiang. “What’s the matter?”

“He’s going to find Bai Qi! Don’t you think he has gone crazy?”

Jiang Fangcheng didn’t even look back. “Isn’t this because you told me about it? If the Xi family gives him a hard time, it gives me a chance to get him back.”

“You dare! I’ll break your legs!” After Father Jiang finished shouting angrily, he couldn’t help but cover his chest with his hands and fall.

This side differed utterly from the other side’s tense atmosphere.

Bai Qi heard footsteps.

He turned his head to look over and saw a woman wearing a cheongsam with her hair pulled up high, who looked to be of a comparable age to Uncle Xi, walking over leisurely.

The woman’s features were beautiful and imposing, with little expression on her face.

No wonder Xi-laoshi wasn’t too close with his uncle’s family in the past.

It looked like everyone wasn’t the type who would show genuine emotions. To put it briefly, they weren’t people who could easily get along with each other.

The aunty and uncle stood side by side, roughly looking like ‘indifference.jpg’ multiplied by two.

Bai Qi didn’t feel anything.

He followed Xi Chengyun and called out, “Aunty.”

Then he gave the large bouquet in his arms. “It’s for you.”

Aunty gave him a surprised look, her taut brows slowly loosened a little, and a little imperceptible smile appeared on her face as she said, “Thank you. This is the first time someone has given me flowers.”

First time?

Hadn’t Uncle Xi given her any before?

Bai Qi turned her head to look at Uncle Xi.

Uncle Xi frowned.

Aunty raised her hand and stroked the petals. The flowers Bai Qi had picked were all beautiful, clustered together in one big mass, as if she were holding the most beautiful colors in this world.

She seemed to like them, making her appear slightly more approachable.

“Come sit and talk. I’ll get some tea.” She said, turning to lead the way.

“What do you want to eat?” She asked again.

Bai Qi followed. “Anything is fine.”

Aunty asked, “How about nougat? I see that kids love them.”

Bai Qi smoothly accepted being addressed as “kids” without blushing as he nodded and sat across from Aunty.

When he turned around, he realized that neither Uncle nor Xi-laoshi had moved a step, and they were still staring at each other; the atmosphere didn’t seem very pleasant.

Aunty said, “I watched your program.”

Bai Qi was startled and slightly embarrassed.

“Young boys are just so much more likable than older men,” Aunty said leisurely.

Bai Qi looked at Aunty with even more shock.

Uncle Xi over there couldn’t stand it any longer. “Your wife gave flowers to my wife as soon as he arrived; what does that mean?”

Xi Chengyun: “You don’t even recognize Carnations? Oh right. Aunty said it was the first time she had received flowers. You’ve never been to a flower shop, so you must not be able to tell the varieties of flowers.”

Uncle Xi: “You’re the only one who can tell the difference! You’re the only one who can tell the difference!”

Xi Chengyun: “Yes, I even know how many varieties of roses there are. After all, I have a rose field. My wife planted it.”
