His family (9)
The bright summer sun shone through the arched windows. The elegant salon, painted in the color of condensed milk, looked like a volcano. It was just like portraying each person’s weakness that they had been protecting with bloodshot eyes all their lives.
Even if it was self-made mayhem, Ingrid felt the shame. Lily’s sharp green eyes staring straight at her were uncomfortable.
Ingrid smiled again at Lily, who clenched her fists. “I asked your husband something and you interrupted, commoner.” She licked her lips as she glared at Lily. “Your heart is stuck with your man. A woman like you will eventually wither to death. Even after hearing everything about him, you still stick by his side like his pet dog. Seems like you can’t see anything properly now, huh?”
However, Ingrid did not understand even half of Lily’s fury.
“Calm down, Your Highness. Please.” Lily clenched her little fists so tightly that her nails dug into the palms of her hands. In the meantime, the voice that came out of her was still. In the midst of this filthy storm, she remained calm as if she was on a sailboat alone. “I don’t want to cover up for Vlad, nor do I want to side with Your Highness.” A breezy sigh escaped between her lips. “He did not try to attack Your Highness. Please calm down a little and think carefully.”
“Presumptuous! No matter how hard you try to cover up for your husband, is it okay to say such a thing in the current situation?”
“He was trying to protect Your Highness. When I asked about you in the tower, he did not even tell me why you were staying in the tower. I swear I’m serious.”
“….”
“You know that it was to save your child’s life that he brought Your Highness to the chapel. Please think of that part again.”
Lily could understand the princess’ anxiety. In the first place, she was the woman who had grown up with her anxiety as a friend for a longer period of time than anyone else.
Even on a calm day, she dared to take a shovel and go out and dig the furrow. It was because she had that sort of personality.
Why did Ingrid suddenly explode like gunpowder? Without going through her thoughts, she could realize it with intuition.
“Vlad will not harm the imperial grandson. He won’t even try to imprison Your Highness by taking him hostage. So,” Lily gently comforted Ingrid, “You don’t have to hurt my husband so cruelly to protect yourself.”
The princess who had nothing to fear because of everything she had in life. In fact, she was now in an unfamiliar land, near the most dangerous plateau on the continent.
There was only one priest who knew her face, and a half-brother who hated his own blood.
She was obviously in good hands. Nevertheless, the fact that she wielded the sword in such a convulsive manner was actually a terrifying rebellion.
“My husband is not a devastated man as Your Highness thinks. He saved me as I said before. It’s not just me, he was the person who brought this territory to life.”
“…”
“He knows how to take care of and protect others. We will take good care of the son you have entrusted to us. Please trust us, Your Highness.”
Was it because of Lily’s voice that rumbled like a lullaby, or was it because of the content of her words? Ingrid’s mood subsided little by little. Her anxiety sank back into the ground, with herself being pulled out.
Lily gave Ingrid what she had learned from him.
“…Words are useless.”
The words were quite cold, but the tension that had risen like thorns seemed to have already been laid aside.
“Anyone can just spit out some words and not mean it. I already know enough that you are a wise woman. But how should I trust you who just talks when you have nothing to give me?”
There was no strength in her shoulders and voice. Her fingertips fluttered, carelessly lowered next to her burgundy dress. Ingrid grabbed the hem of her dress as if hesitatingly.
“I am locked up in the tower because of your husband. It was indefinite. I crawled out, and I was caught in the hands of your husband’s servant, and I came back and was locked in the tower again. How can I believe that your husband is a safe person?”
Lily thought she somehow resembled Vlad at this moment.
