She waited for the wagon to pull into the quiet mountain road, and opened the window leading to the driver’s seat.
“Ah, you scared me!”
At that moment, Emile looked back with his eyes wide open, and Rieta immediately took off her hair ornament and held it out to him.
“…?”
He didn’t understand Rieta’s intentions even when he subconsciously accepted the ornament adorned with jewels.
“Sir Knox.”
“… Yes?”
“I’m asking what happened, this is the cost.”
“Aahh.”
He just nodded his head.
Apparently, Rieta had no desire to say anything nice about Emile to the Duke.
Looking at her, paying for information like this.
In any case, what she offered him was a jewel of great value, so he was happy to sell the information.
“The Princes’ knight… He’s in good health. It looked like he wore a fairly thick layer of leather on the inside.”
Thank God. Rieta let out a sigh of relief, sweeping her heart.
“By any chance… Is there anything decided about his disposition?”
Rieta had a different reason for asking that question.
After all, Knox was a knight of the kingdom, and this time he clearly betrayed the King.
There’s no way King Liz would leave him alone.
“You mean his disposal?”
Emile held out his hand.
Rieta handed another small ornament on her head.
It wasn’t particularly valuable, so there was nothing to be afraid of.
He looked at the ornaments he received and answered.
“Oh, this is quite… I can get out of her. Anyway, I think King Liz forgot about him. There is no disposal.”
“Forgot?”
“Sometimes, I’m like that too. When the payment date approaches, I forget about trivial matters. Because I’m feeling good.”
He pointed his chin to the inside of the carriage in which Rieta was sitting.
The gold and silver treasures that had been there a while ago were now all in King Liz’s pocket.
That made the King happy, and it seemed that he had no time to worry about Sir Knox.
Or at least, he was pretending it was so.
“Then I’m glad…”
“But, Princess. Are you really giving these to me? You can’t take them back later, you know?”
He put the ornaments Rieta had handed him into his chest, watching her warily.
“I have no desire to steal.”
“Haha, I thought only the Princess’ face was righteous, but your heart is even more righteous.”
With that unsolicited compliment, Rieta took off her necklace and handed it to him.
“Are you giving me even more?!”
Surprised or feigned surprise, Emile raised his voice, but he never refused Rieta’s offers.
“You’re generous! As expected, the Mayer family is on a different level!”
In addition, he praised the Mayer family too.
But it wasn’t those candy-coated words that Rieta wanted to hear.
“I don’t want to listen to that.”
“Uh… Do you still have questions to ask? I think I told you everything.”
Emile looked like he was wary of Rieta asking a difficult question.
He seems to have liked the necklace quite a bit. He was holding it very tightly, not wanting to give it back.
“Agnes Lang.”
Rieta cautiously called her name.
“Do you know anything about her? She is a mercenary of the Kingdom.”
“…”
Emile was strangely silent.
She hoped that he would answer anything quickly just like he had been.
Rieta was worried that he might not know about her.
“Damn it.”
Emile fumbled for no reason, then stretched his arm toward the inside of the carriage.
The necklace in his hand dangled in the air.
“Take it back.”
“…Ah.”
He didn’t know about her.
Rieta couldn’t even accept it because she was disappointed.
If she knew it would be like this, she would have asked someone else before leaving the castle.
“Take it.”
Emile waved his arm again, holding out the necklace.
“It’s okay. Just keep it.”
Rieta turned her head and let out a small sigh.
Then Emile cried out, “Damn it, I don’t think I can tell you the story unless you take this damned thing!”
“Huh?!”
Rieta didn’t seem to understand what he was saying, she only blinked at him.
“I’ll tell you! So take it!”
Despite the simpler explanation, Rieta was puzzled.
She wondered if she didn’t need the money to get him to open up in the first place.
“I see.”
Rieta took the necklace back as he told her to.
Emile let out a long sigh, and spat out the conclusion.
“You mean that Kingdom mercenary? Agnes Lang?”
“Yes. Do you know what happened that day?”
“I don’t know the details. It’s just that she seemed to have been at odds with King Liz.”
“With Father?”
“Yes. The King was so pissed off, he made a fuss about tearing up her corpse.”
Rieta’s eyebrows crumpled at the horrible story.
“…Then?”
“Well, I told the King that I would do it like he said, and I dragged her out of the castle. I buried her in a decent place.”
Rieta suddenly stuck her head through the sliding window of the carriage.
“You?!”
“Ahh, really. Why is your voice so loud? I thought the carriage would collapse.”
“Did you bury Agnes?”
“Yes.”
Rieta’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“Why are you looking at me like that? Do I look like someone who sold my soul for money?”
